Biography of Jackie Robinson's Life
Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born in 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. His dad, Jerry Robinson, left the family when Robinson was still an infant. Robinson's mom, Mallie Robinson, had the family move to California. Years later when Robinson attended Muir Technical High School he excelled in sports such as, track, football, baseball, and basketball. After high school, he went to Pasadena Junior College where he also excelled in sports setting records for his school.
He joined the Honolulu Bears in 1941, but was soon drafted into the military. Three years later he was discharged from the army. Then Robinson joined the Kansas City Monarchs in 1946. Not fond of his low pay he started thinking about quiting the team, but Branch Rickey(general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers) gave Robinson a chance to change the world by signing with the Dodgers. Robinson became very famous and broke baseball's color barrier. Robinson played ten seasons with the Dodgers. During the first season with the Dodgers, Robinson married Rachel Isum. Robinson had three kids Jackie Jr.,Sharon, and David Robinson. Jackie Jr. died in 1971 because of a car accident.
Jackie Robinson started having health problems and to have insulin shots. When Jackie Robinson retired from baseball he joined the Chock Full O'Nuts restaurant chain, where he became vice president. He also worked with companies such as, the Harlem YMCA in New York City and a construction company, but only if the place aloud African-Americans. Later in his life Robinson was elected into Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. In 1972 Jackie Robinson died of a heart attack in Stanford, Conneticut. Also Jackie Robinson's number in baseball has been retired so that no other proffesional baseball player can use it on the Brooklyn Dodgers.
